Susan Karabin, DDS, Installed as Past President of the AAP

Dr. Karabin maintains a private periodontal practice and is on the faculty at Columbia University.

CHICAGO–September 8, 2008—The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has appointed Susan Karabin, DDS, Past President of the Board of Trustees at its 94th Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington.

Susan KarabinAn AAP member since 1982, Karabin has chaired the Finance and State and Regional Periodontal Matters Committees, and has served as a member of the Planning and ADA Liaison Committees among numerous other committees and task forces. She is past president of both the New York Academy of Dentistry and president of the Northeastern Society of Periodontists. She is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants. She has also served as a member of the editorial board for Dentistry Today and Periodontal Clinical Investigations and is currently serving on the editorial board for the Journal of Gender Specific Medicine.

During her tenure as AAP President in 2008, Dr. Karabin worked to plan and host the AAP’s Workshop on Inflammation, an interactive session aimed to better understand the role of inflammation in systemic disease. She also helped increase consumer awareness of periodontal disease by acting as the Academy’s primary spokesperson. Dr. Karabin also helped to highlight access to care issues as well as the specific needs oral care in women’s health.

Dr. Karabin is a member of the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Dental Association and is a fellow of the American College of Dentists. In addition, she is also Assistant Attending at Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

Dr. Karabin received her dental degree and specialty training in periodontics from the Columbia School of Dental and Oral Surgery in 1981 and 1984 respectively. She maintains a private periodontal practice in New York City and is Assistant Clinical Professor at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.
