David L. Cochran, DDS, PhD, Installed as President of the AAP

Dr. Cochran is chair of the Department of Periodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

CHICAGO–September 8, 2008—Dr. David L. Cochran of San Antonio, Texas, was installed as President of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Board of Trustees during the Academy's 94th Annual Meeting, held September 6 – 9, 2008, in Seattle, Washington.

David CochranAn AAP member since 1982, Cochran served on the Board of Trustees as President Elect in 2008. Previously, Dr. Cochran served as Vice President in 2007 and as Secretary/Treasurer in 2006. Dr. Cochran follows outgoing President Dr. Susan Karabin, a practicing periodontist in New York City. Dr. Karabin will assume the role of Immediate Past President and will support the Academy in the coming year as a member of the Board of Trustees.

“Dr. Cochran is an outstanding educator and has done tremendous work in his prior leadership roles on the Academy’s Board of Trustees as well as the Executive Committee. I am confident that both the AAP and the entire specialty of periodontology will greatly benefit under his tenure as President,” said Dr. Susan Karabin, 2008 AAP President.

Dr. Cochran currently is also Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. “I am excited to take on my new position as President of the AAP, and I look forward to working with the Academy and its Board to identify opportunities for the future of periodontics,” said Cochran. “This is a very exciting time for periodontology, and I intend to focus on further educating both the dental and health care communities about the importance of periodontal health as it relates to overall health.”

In addition to his work with the AAP Board, Dr. Cochran has previously served the Academy as a member of the Organizing Committee for the AAP Pre-doctoral Periodontal Education Congress and the Task Force for Distance Learning. He has also chaired the Committee on Research Science and Therapy, the Continuing Education Oversight Committee and the Task Force on Distance Learning Options. In addition to all of his committee work, Dr. Cochran is a Copper Level donor to the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation.

David Cochran received his dental degree in 1981 and his PhD in biochemistry in 1982, both from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his specialty training in periodontics from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1985 and is a Board Certified periodontist.
